An inverter turns DC battery power into 230V AC, so it's what lets you run normal household appliances off a battery bank. We carry the largest inverter range in New Zealand: pure sine wave inverters from the NOMAD NPS 350W up to 4500W and the NOMAD MOBILE 6000W, and inverter-chargers from 1000W to 6000W with automatic mains changeover, and we supply NOMAD units to the New Zealand Navy. That range means we also see every way an inverter purchase goes wrong: bought too small for the surge, too big for the battery, the wrong waveform for the appliance, or installed in a way that flattens the bank or fails the standard. The short version: buy pure sine wave, everything we sell for a fixed install is pure sine; size for the start-up surge of your worst appliance, not the label wattage; check the battery can actually deliver the amps, a 1500W load is ~125A at 12V; turn the inverter off when it's idle, because standby draw will flatten a battery on its own; and treat fixed 230V wiring in a caravan, motorhome or boat as registered-electrician work under AS/NZS 3001.2:2022.
