DC Converters

These two devices are often confused but do different jobs. A DC-DC converter steps one battery voltage up or down to another – for example 24V to 12V, or 48V, 72V or 80V down to 12V for electric forklifts, golf carts and materials-handling equipment – and supplies a regulated output voltage to run 12V or 24V circuits and accessories. A DC-DC charger, by contrast, applies a multi-stage charge profile (bulk, absorption, float) to safely refill an auxiliary deep-cycle battery from a vehicle alternator or from solar. Choose a converter by its input-voltage range, its continuous output amps (not just the peak figure), and its IP rating for the environment.

What is the difference between a DC-DC converter and a DC-DC charger? A converter regulates voltage for loads; a charger applies a staged charge profile to refill a battery. If you are charging an auxiliary battery from an alternator, you need a charger.
