The rules for connectable installations have changed. The Electricity (Safety) Amendment Regulations 2025 came into force on 13 November 2025 and cite AS/NZS 3001.2:2022; you can work to the new standard now and you must from 12 November 2026. We supply auto electricians with the components that suit a compliant install, and we'll give you a straight answer on what the standard asks for: inverter and RCD arrangements, LV and ELV separation, and where lithium can and can't be sited in the vehicle.

We're a supply and spec partner, not a certifier: the certification is yours. But getting the right components and layout in front of you before the job starts saves costly rework. One change that catches people out is separation: the 2022 edition now explicitly requires low-voltage and extra-low-voltage systems to be physically separated and isolated, so AC and DC circuit breakers go in different enclosures with an air gap between them. We carry the inverters, DC-DC chargers, batteries, breakers and cabling that fit.

What is changing with AS/NZS 3001.2:2022 and when?

The Electricity (Safety) Amendment Regulations 2025 came into force on 13 November 2025 and cite AS/NZS 3001.2:2022 for connectable installations. There's a 12-month transition: you may use the new standard from 13 November 2025 and you must use it from 12 November 2026. It updates the requirements around modern battery systems, including lithium, in relocatable units, and makes LV and ELV separation an explicit requirement.

Do inverters need an RCD in a caravan install?

Yes. AC circuits in a connectable installation need residual current protection under AS/NZS 3001.2, and that applies to inverter-supplied 230V circuits as well as the shore-supply ones. The arrangement depends on how the inverter's output is switched against the site supply, so tell us the inverter and the changeover and we'll spec the protection for it.

Where can lithium be installed in an RV?

Not in a habitable living area unless it's in a sealed enclosure, or a sealed-off area, vented to the exterior, and the battery has to meet the relevant battery standard. That's the general position under AS/NZS 3001.2:2022. Where the weight saving isn't needed, an AGM or lead-carbon house battery avoids the enclosure question altogether, and it's what we fit in most vans.
